Bretons Homecoming Dance Experience - She Knows How To Have Fun!
In this recount of a homecoming dance experience we talk to Breton. She goes to Ballou High School in Washington DC..
So Breton - Tell us about your night?
Homecoming dance was a night to remember. It was, without question, the most outstanding and exceptionally executed of all of Ballou Schools homecoming dance experiences, ever. From the dresses, to the dinner, to the dancing, to the photography, everything was thought of and designed to help us have the best night of our lives!

What did you do for your hair and make-up?
I will never forget the way I did my hair and make up; simple, but elegant.
I had dyed my hair a deep kind of mahogany red a few days prior to the homecoming dance, because I knew that shade would look absolutely ravishing with the dress I had purchased for the night. The night before homecoming, I double conditioned my hair with Argon Oil and Coconut Oil, then put on an Argon Oil Hair Mask to seal in the much coveted Argon Oil sheen.
The next day, two hours before I had to leave for the homecoming dance, I removed the mask, rewashed and reconditioned my hair, and straightened it slowly and carefully, being sure to use Protective Spray. The result? Shining, gleaming, mahogany red locks! I was so happy
For make up, I trusted in the talents of my schools Cosmetologist. I decided that Id like to go for a kind of low key, subdued make up look.
I wanted to look pretty and classy, but not too over the top. I decided Id like to go for an Alexa Chung kind of vibe: natural looking, and sweet, with just a little bit of spice. My Cosmetologist completely understood. First, she applied a foundational cream across my face. Next, she applied a light bronzing powder, just beneath my cheekbones. rnrnShe blended everything together with a powder foundation.
Next, she lined my eyes very lightly with liner, then curled and mascarad my lashes. rnrnFinally, she painted my lips deep pink. I was absolutely in love with the look- simple, fresh, youthful, and fun!
Where did you get your dress and tell us about it?
I got my dress from Asos, online.
To this day, its my favorite thing I’ve ever worn. It was gold from top to bottom, and sparkly, and my shoes matched it perfectly. rnrnIt was covered in stones and jewels and caught the light at every angle! The sleeves were long and the neck was high, but that was perfectly balanced- the dress was completely backless, with side cut outs. It fit me perfectly and made me feel absolutely beautiful.
Did you have a date or go alone?
My date was a boy named Owen Simpson. I had actually been friends with him since the tenth grade, and had had a crush on him since the eleventh grade. He was smart, and fun, and he had been in the school play in the twelfth grade with me, which was really nice. But he was really shy and quiet, and I definitely did not think he was interested in me.
Two weeks before the homecoming Dance, he came to my table at lunch. That wasn’t weird- we were good friends so that sort of thing happened all the time. What was weird was that he was wearing a bow tie. I remember that I started laughing the minute he walked up because he looked so flustered and funny in that little bow tie. I was like, "Nice bow tie, Owen," and then before I knew it, he had PULLED OUT HIS UKULELE, and was playing Wonder Wall.
Everyone in the lunch room around me literally stopped eating and watched him. I was kind of embarrassed, but also kind of amazed. It was like a movie! At the end everyone clapped, and then he asked if I would go with him to the homecoming Dance. Of course I said yes!
What was the highlight of your night?
The highlight of the night was probably right after dinner, before any one had managed to do any drinking. I looked around at everyone as we all ran onto the dance floor, and I remember thinking, "I love my friends and I love my life". I was so happy. Later on, the night got kind of stressful- girls fighting over boys, a couple girls realizing their dresses were too similar, that sort of thing.
What did you learn that you think others should know for next time?
I think that, the best thing to remember about homecoming dance experiences are that they are all just for fun. your homecoming dance experiences should be completely stress-free experiences. If you start to try and make them into the biggest deal ever, then they are no longer fun. And all they should be is fun. Youre there with your best friends, looking your best, and the last thing you want is to put any pressure on yourself. You get that from school the rest of the year round. If there is one tip I could give girls everywhere about their homecoming Dance experiences, it is to just relax into the moment, and enjoy yourself!
Breton thank you so much for sharing your experience.Girls - we want your stories, if you have been to homecoming in the last year or two please send us your experience, so we can share with the girls that are going to their first dance.
